Living Green is our environmental movement which inspires care for our environment as a “Way of Life” throughout our hotels; both for our people and our guests.
Here at Maldron Hotel Shandon Cork City, we are on a journey to significantly improve our processes and practices to reduce any harmful impacts we are having on the environment. Many new changes have already been implemented and we hope you will notice during your stay with us but we acknowledge this is also a long-term process so we hope you will recognise new improvements every time you return to us.
Tent cards have been placed in all guest bedrooms which highlights waste recycling and towel policies. There is widespread use of LED lighting throughout the hotel with a schedule in place for the changeover of all the remaining lighting. All tea and coffee in the hotel are ethically sourced. With a city centre location, the hotel is in a prime spot for guests and staff to arrive by low carbon means utilising the public transport network nearby, the cycle to work scheme is also encouraged to our staff members.
A stringent recycling and waste management system has been implemented and we are, where possible, choosing items with minimal packaging and asking our suppliers to offer more eco-friendly options. As for suppliers, the majority are local which helps reduce emissions and energy use.
Also, we can’t forget to mention the newest addition to our team – Pat the Penguin! We adopted Pat the Penguin in February 2021 and he is currently working from his home in Fota Wildlife Park. Pat is an important part of the team as he helps to demonstrate our commitment toward conserving our environment and increasing our biodiversity. If visiting Fota, make sure to say hello to Pat!
Here are a few more ways we are trying to make a difference.
Environmental Impact Team
Another key focus for us and is the training and education of our team to increase their awareness of the importance of being ‘Green’. An Environmental Impact Team has been put in place, led by a Green Champion and extensive training has been undertaken by our team members on our environmental policies and procedures.
As part of the Maldron Hotel Shandon promise to be more in harmony with our environment and to reduce our carbon footprint, we are delighted to introduce our bird houses! Donated by staff members and decorated during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, these houses are a safe haven for the garden birds of this city jungle.
Although we may be short of some outside garden space, we planted herb boxes on our roof. They are made from recycled material and the herbs are used in our own bar and kitchen.
Introduction of composter
A composter was launched on our roof– this facility was put in place to compost some of our food waste that we will then use to fertilize our herb gardens
